Microdermabrasion in Ubud and the Skin It Suits
There is a particular sound to it, a low and steady hum, and beneath that the faint sweep of something fine moving across the skin. No needles, no heat, nothing that stings. Microdermabrasion belongs to the more technical end of skin care, concerned with skin texture and clarity rather than relaxation alone. It tends to come up after a week or two under the Ubud sun, when skin starts to look duller than it did at home.
A Resurfacing Facial in Practice
A resurfacing facial works on the outermost layer of the skin, the one that holds dulled cells, sunscreen residue, pollution, and the general accumulation of a week spent outdoors. The treatment combines a fine abrasive surface with gentle suction, gently removing the outer layer through controlled abrasion and suction rather than chemical exfoliation. This makes it a mechanical exfoliation rather than a chemical one, making it a suitable option for some people who cannot tolerate acid-based exfoliants. Dermatological guidance describes it as a minimally invasive epidermal resurfacing procedure, and that phrasing is worth holding on to. The word minimal is doing real work there. Nothing dramatic happens in the room.
The version at Akoya Spa runs for sixty minutes and asks very little of you beyond stillness. It sits comfortably alongside the Balinese wellness rituals we have offered for years.
Sixty Minutes of Microdermabrasion
Your therapist begins with a cleanse and a thorough look at your skin, asking where breakouts or congestion usually occur and whether anything has changed recently. The microdermabrasion treatment follows, moving in slow sections across the forehead, cheeks, nose and chin. Most guests describe the sensation as a firm cat’s tongue, oddly pleasant once the first minute has passed. Around the nose and along the jaw, it can feel slightly more noticeable, and the therapist will adjust as she goes.
What follows matters as much as the pass itself. Skin is calmed, hydrated and left under a light mask while the room stays quiet. You will not leave in a hurry, and you should not plan to.
The Skin That Suits It
Microdermabrasion tends to suit a dull complexion, uneven tone and texture, congested pores, and the post-inflammatory marks left after breakouts have cleared. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that it is suitable for all skin colours, which is not true of every resurfacing option.
While many guests notice brighter skin after a single treatment, concerns such as uneven texture or acne marks often respond best to a series of sessions recommended by your therapist.
There are people it does not suit, and we would rather say so before you book. If your skin scars easily, if you are prone to cold sore breakouts, if you have taken isotretinoin within the past six months, or if you have any spot or patch of skin that is changing, please speak with a doctor first. Active sunburn, which happens to a good number of visitors in their first days here, also means waiting. Our therapists will ask about all of this at the start, and a treatment postponed by a week costs nothing.
Caring for Resurfaced Skin in a Tropical Climate

This is the part written specifically for Ubud. Newly resurfaced skin is more sensitive to sunlight, and clinical guidance advises sunscreen whenever you are outdoors for at least a week afterwards. In a temperate country, that advice is easy to follow. Here it takes some thought.
Book your treatment for late afternoon if you can. Avoid the open scooter ride back at midday. Delay long walks in direct sun, swimming pools, and extended outdoor activities for a day or two. Be gentle with your own routine at home by setting aside any exfoliating facial products, scrubs, and retinol for the rest of the week. Skin needs very little in those first days beyond cleansing, moisturiser and shade. Guests who follow these aftercare recommendations generally see smoother, more even results. Guests who spend the following morning on a sun lounger tend not to do so.
Facial Treatments in Ubud That Sit Alongside It
Some skin wants resurfacing. Some want something slower. Our Balinese Facial uses plant-based ingredients and traditional massage over 60 minutes and suits reactive or simply tired skin. Celluma LED is a 15-minute light therapy treatment that is often added after another facial. The Super Facial 3-in-1 Geneo covers exfoliation, infusion, and massage in a single hour. Your therapist can tell you which of these belongs to your skin this week, and it will not always be the same answer.
Microdermabrasion rewards a little planning, both in the week you choose and the days that follow it.
If you’re considering microdermabrasion, our therapists can help you decide whether it suits your skin and your time in Bali.
